Mabhengwane of the household of Mbilaziyawucosha — known in English as Cullen Mackenzie — grew up in Eshowe, in the heart of Zululand. A native speaker of isiZulu and English, he has studied a wide range of languages including Latin, Greek, French, Arabic, Sesotho, and Mandarin. He lives in Johannesburg, where he works as the Knowledge and Research Manager for an NGO that supports Catholic schools.
Beyond his professional work, he teaches isiZulu, and translates both written texts and audio recordings. His true passion lies in writing — especially poetry and short stories — in the language of Phunga and Mageba.
